About Us
The Institute of Business Studies (IBS), which traces its origins to 1988, is a product of the entrepreneurial vision of its founder Mr. Mick Nades, a naturalized citizen, who is also the Principal of Nades & Associates, an accounting firm set up in 1986.

The primary objective of setting up the Institute was to provide revision classes for the professional examinations conducted by the Papua New Guinea Institute of Accountants (PNGIA) as there was none available for Accounting graduates at that time.

At the inception, there were only nine qualified Papua New Guinean Accountants although more than 300 graduated with Commerce/Accounting degrees from the two Government-owned Universities, viz. the University of Technology (UNITECH) and the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG).

Today, there are more than 400 fully qualified PNG Accountants and IBS is proud to be a significant contributor to this number from 1989 to 1996.

Indeed, IBS produced the first two female Accountants of Papua New Guinea. The Institute’s present objective is to enhance the prospects for Papua New Guineans to study and further their careers in Accounting, Business and Computing.

The current status of IBS and the many milestones reached by the Institute during its brief existence are documented in the account that follows.

STATUS OF IBS AS AN INSTITUTION OF HIGHER EDUCATION

The Institute of Business Studies (IBS) has been granted recognition as an Institution of Higher Education by the Office of Higher Education (OHE) under the provisions of the Higher Education Act 1983. The Commission of Higher Education (CHE) granted Institute of Business Studies recognition as an Institution of Higher education on the 25th of July, 2007.

The Institute of Business Studies (IBS), whose origin dates back to 1988 is a body corporate incorporated under the Papua New Guinea Companies Act of 1997. As stated, the purpose of the IBS at its inception was to provide revision classes for the professional examinations conducted by the Papua New Guinea Institute of Accountants (PNGIA). The PNGIA now grants admission to PNGIA membership at Registered Graduate level for those conferred with the Associate Degree in Business (Accounting) of IBS and Southern Cross University, Australia. The IBS is a training institution registered with the National Training Council, Ministry of Labour and Industrial Relations.

In 1996, the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) granted IBS the status of a sub-centre at its Institute of Distance and Continuing Education (IDCE) enabling it to conduct classes for its Diploma in Commerce programme. By a letter dated 3 February 2003, IBS was approved as a Study Centre of the UPNG for the purpose of offering its two semesters Diploma in Accounting programme.

On 16 February 1999, the Southern Cross University of Australia (SCU) and the IBS signed an agreement to promote, market, and teach SCU course units leading to the conferment of SCU awards.

On 14 June 2002, Deakin University of Australia and IBS entered into an agreement to offer the Deakin MBA programme in PNG to enable holders of an appropriate undergraduate qualification with relevant work experience to meet the requirements for the award of a MBA from Deakin University.

Further, IBS is an Accredited Test Centre for International Computer Driving Licence (ICDL) under the supervision of the Australian Computer Society. IBS also conducts the Diploma in Information Technology (DIT) course to prepare students to sit the Diploma in Information Technology Examination of the Australian Computer Society to attain the status of Associate member. It is important to note that since Semester One 2003, Twenty-eight (28) IBS students have won Forty (40) International Rankings in the Diploma in Information Technology Examinations conducted by the Australian Computer Society (ACS).

IBS today, offers a wide array of study programmes ranging from Certificates and Diplomas to Undergraduate and Postgraduate degrees. These are the many landmarks achieved by this young institution in its brief existence of Twenty years.

Student enrolments have ranged from 700 to 950 in the last five years, with representation from every province and all sections of the community, from school leavers to working adults and both genders. The IBS provides 60 – 140 scholarships each year, based on an aptitude test, to academically bright but financially disadvantaged students.

Besides the educational contributions rendered to the nation, the IBS also renders community service. IBS maintains close relationships with the Red Cross Society so as to discharge its social responsibilities. From 1996 to 2000 and 2006 to 2007, a Miss IBS was sponsored for the Miss PNG Quest conducted by the Red Cross Society. The funds raised by Miss IBS through various fund raising activities were donated to the Red Cross Society.

Apart from this, blood donation camps are organized regularly for the Red Cross at IBS campus, where a large number of students, academic and support staff participate.

In 2001, IBS increased its sponsorship to the PNG Sports Federation to become a Corporate Sponsor. IBS is now one of the Silver category Corporate Sponsors since 2005.

Also, IBS supports several Charity organizations each year such as Missionaries of Charity, the Salvation Army, the City Mission, and the Cheshire Home.

The IBS has also played a leading role in the rehabilitation of youth attached to the NCD Youth Association. Thus, IBS has become a widely respected organisation and a good corporate citizen sponsoring various sporting and charity activities.
