| PUT YOURSELF IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT |
| |
| IMAGINE you are one of the thousands of Papua New Guinean who know something about computers but can't really say what their level is. You're pretty confident with a PC and efficient too, but you can't easily prove it to others.
You see plenty of job ads that require "basic competence" but what does this mean exactly? And how can you be sure that you're already at this level? What's the benchmark, the standard...?
Or maybe you're one of the growing numbers of people who are being drawn into computers by the Internet. The world of computers is quite baffling and probably a bit scary. How do you structure your learning? How much do you need to know where should you begin and whom should you turn to for help? |

| WHO IS ICDL FOR ? |
| |
An ICDL is for everyone who uses a computer and everyone who would like to.
It is a practical, flexible and cost-effective way of learning, teaching and testing the basic skills required in the everyday use of computers - at work, school or in the home. The ICDL is destined to become the most widely recognized, international certification in the field of computer use because it targets the full spectrum of the population and it has the support and supervision of the industry's professional societies around the globe. |
| |
| ICDL – WHAT IS IT ? |
| |
| The ICDL is an end-user standard out-and-out. No programming is taught. However, obtaining the ICDL is not trivial. The student has to pass in each of seven modules, and the level of competence expected is very high. To obtain the ICDL a student must demonstrate practical proficiency in each of the most commonly used software tools. The student has to pass all seven modules at a very high level - in some cases as high as 90%. The standards for the ICDL have been set jointly by the major European Computer Societies. In Europe it is known as the European Computer Driving Licence. The ICDL is the only EC recognized IT qualification at present. Worldwide it is administered by the European Computer Driving Licence Foundation. |
| |
| HOW DOES ICDL WORK ? |
| |
The ICDL is based on the successful European scheme, which operates Europe-wide, has spread to other continents and is now available in Papua New Guinea. Around the world, schools, industry and government agencies have adopted the concept, setting it as the computer literacy performance benchmark.
Only accredited test centres like IBS can purchase ICDL Skills Cards for sale to individual computer users. These Skills Cards list the seven competencies required for a computer user to qualify for a licence. Once the computer user has passed tests on all the following seven competencies, they qualify for an ICDL. IBS would organize to get your ICDL with the Australian Computer Society. |
