Open Day
IBS Open Day is usually conducted at the beginning and at the end of the school year and normally takes place at the Institute, 6 mile campus.
The main purpose of staging the Open Day at our campus is to show case what courses the Institute has to offer to Grade 10 and 12 leavers and study facilities the institute has.
The first Open Day was held on the 19th January, 2008 where more than 100 parents and students spent Saturday morning browsing through various course packages displayed by each school’s that we offered at the Institute. Parents and students were happy with the staging of the Open Day as they were able to get good feed back from the Lecturers, Support staff and students on the courses offered at IBS.
The management and staff are looking forward to another successful Open Day.

IBS 9th Graduation Ceremony
The Institute held its 9th Graduation Ceremony on the 4th April 2008 in which 341 students graduated with Certificates, Diplomas, Associate Degrees and Bachelor’s Degrees. Corporate Sponsors, Parents, Relatives, friends and graduands traveled from other Provinces to witness and farewell their colleagues.

Special guests who were Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Dr Puka Temu, Minister for Labour and Industrial Relations, Hon. Mark Maipakai, Minister for Forest, Hon. Belden Namah and a representative from the Office of Higher Education attended the graduation ceremony. The three Members of Parliament presented certificates to both graduands and continuing students who completed their studies.
The two MPs, Hon. Mark Maipakai and Hon. Belden Namah were proud to attend the graduation as they were former students of IBS. Hon. Dr. Puka Temu in his speech encouraged the graduands and continuing students to use the skills and knowledge gained in the institute in an honest way when out in the field of employment.
The Institute Director Mr. Mick Nades addressed the Corporate Sponsors, parents, guardians and students that IBS has been granted recognition as an Institute of Higher Education by the Office of Higher Education and that the next step is to become a University.

CPA PNG Visit
The Institute has developed a good partnership with the premier accounting professional, Certified Practicing Accountant Papua New Guinea (CPA PNG).
The visit by the Executive Director for CPA PNG on Friday 11th April 2008 was a great privilege for the Institute; it was also the FIRST GUEST SPEAKER for the year.
The Executive Director for CPA PNG presented a topic on its International Financial Reporting Standards Setting: Rationale and Process, basically in the role of accounting standards and regulation and harmonization of financial reporting. Apart from the visit, CPA PNG earlier donated Core Modules of CPA PNG Professional Examination Program on the 21st February 2008 to the Institute to stimulate the Accounting and Business Lecturers and students enhanced their knowledge in the field of accounting to become professional Accountants.
Undergraduates Lecturers and students for Business and Accounting attended the session for their own benefit to understand the role that accountants play and must adhere to in this business world. CPA PNG Best Performance Award was awarded to Mr. Raymond Meni Mell who graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Business (Accounting) during the 9th Graduation Ceremony on the 4th April 2008. The Management, staff and the students take this opportunity to thank CPA PNG for contributing in developing future accountants for PNG and look forward to a continuous relationship with CPA PNG.

Aptitude Test
The Aptitude Test is held annually. It has been conducted for some years to assist students who are academically bright but are faced with financial problems. This year’s Aptitude Test was held on Saturday 12th April, 2008 in which 999 candidates sat for the exam. The test consists of thirty five general question and the participants had to sit the exam for 20 minutes. Two hundred and forty five candidates were short listed for the scholarship in which 13 of them awarded with full scholarship and the rest were given half scholarship. The candidates short listed are now into their first week of lectures in CIA Batch 3 and CIC Batch 3.

Seed Event
The Students Enhancement Experience Day (SEED) is a day filled with events organized by the institute for students to integrate with other students outside of the classroom environment. The idea behind these events is to get students involved in such activities to gain confidence and also to develop themselves to be an out going person when they graduate from the Institute.
The Innovation & Development Department and the Students Committee are the key organizers of these events. The events have been categorized in two parts, Part 1 is Academic and Part 2 is the Cultural Entertainment.
SEED Part 1 was held on the 9th of May 2008 and consisted of the following activities such as Quiz, Public Speaking, Debate, Impromptu Speech and Java Debugging. The event included other tertiary institutions like Don Bosco Technological Institute, Port Moresby National High School and Gordon Secondary School who supported our initiative and took part in the Debate, Public Speaking and Quiz contest. This is the first time IBS has sent out invitations to other Tertiary Institutions in NCD to take part in such activities and build relationships with them.
SEED Part 2 will be held on Saturday 6th September 2008.The event will include cultural activities in which students from each Region will perform their cultural dancers and prepare their traditional type of dishes. The highlight of the event will be the crowning of Mr. IBS and Ms. IBS. In 2007, Mr. Scott Faite was crowned as Mr. IBS and Miss. Stephanie Helali as Miss IBS.
The staff and students are looking forward to another successful Cultural event this year.

Career Centre
The Career Centre has been progressing well since commencement of its training on the 08th October 2007. Accounting students of the institute are trained as Accounts Officers comprises of Inventory, Accounts Payable, Account Receivable, Payroll, Fixed Assets and Book Keeping. Job training is for a period of six weeks in which the trainees will be rotating on a weekly basis.
The main idea behind the Career Centre is to train, develop, enhance and give practical knowledge to the accounting students to become professional accountant and become productive at work on the first day of work which will lessen the corporate client’s burden from spending more time training the new graduates.
The students are evaluated to identify their strengths and areas that they need to improve on. During the training the students are encouraged to work as a team and solve problems as a team.
A total of three batches with 17 students undergone the training which they received job training certificate and the forth batch now is currently in progress with a total of 8 trainee students. Out of the 17 students who went through the training, nine of them are currently working as Accounts Officers with corporate clients.
The Computing students commenced their training this year as PC Support Technicians which is equal to A+ Certification in PC Hardware. This training comprises of Overview and Terminologies of H/W and S/W, How S/W and H/W works together, The System Board, Memory, Data Storage, Supporting Windows 9x/ nt/2000 /2003 / Network / Printers/ Communication on Internet, Preventive maintenance and Backup & Fault Tolerance. This knowledge will give the students confidence in handling the PC Hardware professionally.
The Institute is now looking forward to the launching of the Career Centre as the CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE IN LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT on the 4th June 2008.

IBS Student's Sports Competition
The Student Committee & Innovation and Development Division of the Institute organized Volleyball and Netball competition for the students’ to play and get to know each other and also build relationships with the staff and the Institute.
The games usually played at the Career Centre Campus to encourage students to make use of the sporting facilities there. This year’s competition will commence on Friday 2nd May, 2008 with a total of 7 teams participating. Out of the seven teams, 6 teams for volleyball, (3 female teams -1 DIT, 2 CIC Batch 1 & 3 male teams – 2 DIT,1 CIA Batch 1) and 1 female Team(CIC Batch 2) for netball. The Teams will be challenging each other to win the trophy and Cash prizes.
The best players of the competition will be selected to represent IBS in Corporate games for volleyball and netball.

IBS Rugby Team
The Institute management’s proudly sponsored the RUGBY TEAM that took part in the Corporate 9’s Rugby League Competition which commenced late last year. The Team was Coached by Mr. Cornelius Botingnuc, Demonstrator, School of Computing, who later withdrew from the position of Coach, and Mrs. Vani Davis, Team Leader, Innovation & Development Division as Team Manager. The Team comprises of both staffs and students of the institute. As part of IBS Culture, this a way of building and maintaining relationships between the staff, students and the Institute and also it is a way of promoting the Institute to other people, organizations and building relationships with them. The Team played enthusiastic games and made their way to the finals under the supervision of Mr. Toby Davis as their step in Coach. Team IBS played with Paul Paraka Lawyers (PPL Giants) in the semi finals which they drew the game 4 points to 4 after a scoreless extra time given on Friday 28th March, 2008.The win was awarded to PPL Giants for scoring the first try of the match.
TEAM IBS is eagerly looking forward to the future competition and hoping to win the CUP this year.

National Union of Students (NUS)
The Institute has received an invitation from National Union of Students at UPNG to attend the NUS meeting on the 12th April 2008.The purpose of the meeting was to discuss all NUS activities/programs for this year which will also include the NUS games that will be hosted by the University of Papua New Guinea in June. As part of the management’s commitment to improve sports activities in the institute, IBS is considering to take part in the NUS games and other activities so that students can get to know the staff and students from other universities, build relationships with them and also enhance their experience to become productive after graduating from the institute. It is also a good way of creating awareness about IBS.
